| In 1999, Seemann Composites Inc. (SCI) was chosen to participate in the fabrication of a 1/4 scale Composite Advanced Sail in conjunction with NSWCCD. Manufacturing concepts were developed and one-off tooling was fabricated by Seemann Composites and CNC machined to the net surface by NSWC. The part was fabricated by Seemann Composites and delivered to the Navy on budget and on time. SCI worked closely with NSWCCD to develop and design the manufacturing details. The stiffeners were built from syntactic foam and made in-house by SCI, offering a significant cost savings to the program compared to buying foam from an outside vendor. The shaping of the foam stiffener cores was done using a combination of CAD developed templates and historic wooden boat building techniques, illustrating SCI's general expertise with materials and its ability to find unique solutions to a wide range of obstacles faced during development work. | ||||||||
