APACHE HELICOPTER FUSELAGE SECTION DEMONSTRATOR
After the success of the AST Program, Boeing and its customers (the U.S. Army) implemented a high risk, high pay off program to reduce weight and labor cost for the Apache Helicopter Fuselage, reportedly one of the most complex structures ever laminated at one time. The project utilized the z-axis pre-form technology and SCI resin infusion technology to process and co-cure a fuselage skin with all structural bulkheads in a single step. Under the Boeing contract, SCI developed tooling and processes to resin infuse a one-piece, stitched carbon fiber pre-form for an Apache Helicopter fuselage. The program was a complete success; in fact, SCI labor savings were greater than Boeing's expectations. For this work, Seemann Composites received Boeing's Phantom Works Supplier 2002 Innovation Award.
